Favourited in swimming and Kungfu Tea, Xiaoxiong, a junior student, celebrated her 10^th survival anniversary in a special way------she was invited to participate in the First International Summit of Non-Invasive Treatment on 22rd of October 2009. 11 years ago, she was diagnosed as osteosarcoma which is with very high mortality rate even with amputation. Because of the technology of High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU), she lives a normal (with limb-saved) but happy life now.

In the afternoon of 22^nd, on the First International Summit of Non-Invasive Treatment held by Chongqing Medical University and People's Liberation Army 307 Hospital (Beijing), first released their 19 cases with different malignancy for 10 years survival after the treatment with High Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU)! The data are just from the Second Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and Beijing 307 Hospital which have made an in-depth long term follow-up to some of the Patients who had the ultrasound ablation treatment 10 years ago.

Professor Zhang Lian from Chongqing Medical University presented the details of these 19 patients from 8 provinces, aged from 16 to 80, suffered from liver cancer, osteosarcoma, breast cancer, soft tissue tumors and soft tissue sarcoma. The longest surviving time is 11 years and 7 months until now. 4 of them came to the conference shared their experiences and took photos with physicians who treated them. Warm applauses were drawn around the hall. All attendees were so touched. 

More than 120 representatives who are well-known scientists and experts in the minimal invasive or non-invasive treatment from 19 countries and areas around the world were involved in this Summit. As a new technology features noninvasive, bloodless, HIFU has got great attention by the doctors and the patients.

The inventor of JC, the system which was used to treatment patients ten years ago, Prof. Wang Zhibiao said, " 5 years survival is a standard to define the cure by WHO. We are happy that our patients can live longer than 10 years. Ten year ago, the technology was at the earlier stage, most of patients who chose HIFU had been the relapsers after surgery or the patients with advanced, but the results are still so encouraging. You can imaging, with the improvement of HIFU technology and the more and more experiences we get from the clinical practice, how the technology will benefit the patients! We are very confident that in the near future this technology will help most of the patients to defeat cancers especially the cancer in the early stage.”

HIFU, which is thermal ablation, is quite different from the thermal therapy. Started from 1988, Professor Wang Zhibiao with his team devoted themselves into this technology. In the December of 1997, the first patient was treated by the system JC successfully. It is the first clinical application using ultrasound guided HIFU to treat malignancy extracorporeally. After that, bone tumors, breast tumors, liver cancer, soft tissue sarcoma, pancreatic cancer and various solid malignancies have been treated, and 13 countries or areas have imported the systems.  

One of the three foreign academicians of Chinese Engineering Academy, the academician Dr. Sheung Tat FAN from University of Hong Kong, said in an interview, "HIFU will be a standard in cancer treatment."

The chairman of the European Sonochemistry Society, Prof. Timothy Mason from Coventry University of UK is the first people to introduce JC HIFU system from Chongqing Haifu to west. He predicted, "HIFU will be widely used in treating tumors”.
